Description

Pneumatic Presence: The Reformed Understanding of the Lord’s Supper offers a clear, concise and accessible exploration of the Reformed tradition’s understanding of the Lord’s Supper. Rooted in Scripture and informed by the theological heritage of the Reformation, this book seeks to explain what Reformed Christians believe takes place when the church gathers around the Lord’s Table and why the sacrament remains vital to Christian worship and discipleship. The Lord’s Supper has been the subject of theological reflection and debate throughout church history. Questions concerning Christ’s presence, the role of faith, the work of the Holy Spirit and the relationship between the sacramental signs and the realities they signify have shaped Christian thought for centuries. Within the Reformed tradition, the Supper is neither merely a memorial nor a physical transformation of the elements. Rather, Reformed theology emphasizes the true spiritual presence of Christ and the gracious work of the Holy Spirit, through whom believers are brought into genuine communion with the risen Lord. Through biblical, historical, and theological analysis, Pneumatic Presence examines the central themes that shape this distinctive understanding. It explores the biblical foundations of the Lord’s Supper, traces its development within Reformation theology and considers the contributions of important Reformed thinkers and confessions. Particular attention is given to Christ’s presence, the relationship between Word and sacrament, the role of faith in receiving the benefits of the Supper and the Spirit’s work in making the sacrament spiritually effective for believers. Written for pastors, scholars, students and the lay faithful, the book makes the richness of Reformed sacramental theology accessible without sacrificing depth.
