Description
Rice is a model monocot plant and it is the staple food for more than half of the world population. Rice production must be increased using yield enhancing genes with less nitrogen application. Natural genes for disease and insect resistance from wild relatives must be indentied and transferred into crop cultivars to keep the environment safe by avoiding application of hazardous pesticides. Salt tolerance traits from a halophytic wild species must be transferred into cultivated rice varieties for promoting climate resilient rice cultivation in vast salt affected land in coastal areas. C4-like traits identied in the halophytic wild species can be transferred into C3 rice plants and utilized for efficient carbin capturing and increase rice yield.
