Description

This study investigates the impact of sanitation infrastructure on student attendance at colleges in rural Nepal using Nola Pender’s health promotion model (HPM). The research, undertaken over a period of six months through classroom observations, focus groups and textual analysis, finds that poor sanitation unsafe water, lack of private toilets and poor menstrual hygiene creates cognitive and physical barriers which reduce attendance, concentration and self-efficacy in literary analysis. The disproportionate impact of absenteeism due to menstruation on female students. On the flip side, better sanitation enhances students’ sense of safety, dignity and intellectual preparedness. Teachers who use empathetic, community-cantered pedagogies and normalize conversations about hygiene help reduce shame, build student confidence, and foster collective agency. Students are resilient despite the obstacles, and that resiliency can be harnessed through supportive teaching. The study argues that sanitation is a pedagogical issue, not only a health issue, and that infrastructure investments are vital to educational quality and critical literacy. Removing barriers to sanitation is fundamental for the development of self-efficacy and meaningful literacy engagement.
