This book examines how the pursuit of power, the accumulation of money, and the corrosive force of greed intersect to shape the lived experience of poverty across Africa. It moves from concept to history to economics to human consequence, and closes with pathways toward accountability and more equitable governance. Each chapter pairs analytical discussion with a documented case study, so that argument and evidence sit side by side. The chapters are organised in five parts. Part One establishes the conceptual vocabulary — power, money, and greed — and how they reinforce one another. Part Two traces the historical and structural roots of exploitation, from colonial extraction to post-independence governance. Part Three examines the economics of corruption, illicit financial flows, and global capital. Part Four centres the human cost borne by the poor. Part Five turns to resistance, reform, and constructive alternatives. Facts and figures cited in the case studies are drawn from publicly documented historical and institutional sources and are presented as a foundation for further scholarly development, referencing, and fieldwork appropriate to a full academic publication. This book began as a question I could not set aside after three decades in higher education and governance research: why does a continent so rich in resources continue to produce so much poverty? The answer, I came to believe, is not found in geology or geography, but in the human triad that gives this book its title — power, money and greed — and in the institutions that either restrain that triad or surrender to it. What follows is not an indictment of any single nation, leader or institution. It is an attempt to name a pattern that repeats, with local variation, from the Sahel to the Horn of Africa to the mineral belts of the south: the capture of public authority for private benefit, and the quiet transfer of cost from the powerful to the poor. Where I use case studies, I have built composite illustrations from patterns documented in peer-reviewed research, African Union governance reports.
