Building Informed Democracies
Democratic societies today face a paradox: while citizens have more information than ever, doubts about their ability to use it effectively are widespread. Misinformation proliferates on social media, algorithms influence content visibility, and generative AI creates convincing material, all amid unequal access to technology. Current approaches often treat these as separate issues, addressing them independently through fact-checking, digital skills training, and civic education.
This book argues that information literacy and civic literacy are interconnected. A citizen who can evaluate sources but lacks understanding of public decision-making cannot engage meaningfully, while one with civic knowledge but poor information skills risks falling victim to manipulation.
