Morphology is often described in the idiom of lists—affixes, categories, rules—useful inventories that nonetheless miss what languages actually do. Languages do not behave like lists. They behave like systems: dynamic, evolving, patterned, and structured across multiple scales. This book begins from a simple but transformative premise: morphology is best understood as a field shaped by geometry, forces, and motion. Across twelve chapters, it develops a comprehensive model of morphological evolution that explains not only how forms change, but why they change in the characteristic ways they do. Despite surface diversity, the world’s languages are argued to inhabit a shared morphodynamic space—an architecture whose curvature constrains possible configurations, whose resonance minima stabilize recurring categories, whose boundary structure regulates layering and transitions, and whose interference laws shape co-occurrence and ordering.
