Does earning a PhD guarantee success, professional recognition, or a prosperous life? If advanced education represents the highest level of academic achievement, why do many highly educated individuals struggle to secure meaningful employment, financial stability, and opportunities to use their knowledge? The Paradox of Academic Excellence confronts these questions through a philosophical examination of doctoral education, credentialism, meritocracy, labour-market inequalities, and the meaning of human prosperity. It challenges the widespread assumption that educational attainment automatically leads to professional success and argues that the value of knowledge cannot be measured exclusively through income, occupational status, institutional prestige, or employment outcomes. Across six parts and twenty-four chapters, this monograph explores the promise of academic excellence, the relationship between knowledge and power, the political economy of educated unemployment, and the philosophical foundations of a meaningful human life. It examines how universities, employers, governments, and social institutions influence the recognition and application of advanced knowledge. It also considers how artificial intelligence, global inequalities, and changing professional environments are reshaping the future of expertise. Drawing on philosophical traditions, sociological perspectives, and established scholarship, the book distinguishes intellectual achievement from credential-based recognition and economic reward. It argues that unemployment or underemployment does not automatically invalidate the intellectual value of a doctorate, just as possessing an advanced qualification does not, by itself, establish superior competence or guarantee prosperity.
