This field visit report examines the sentencing system and prison administration in Nepal through a study of Bhimphedi Prison, Makwanpur. It explores the practical realities of imprisonment, the treatment and rehabilitation of prisoners, prison management, and the challenges faced within the correctional system. The report connects legal principles with observations from the field, highlighting the importance of humane treatment, rehabilitation, effective sentencing, and respect for the rights and dignity of prisoners. It also discusses areas where prison reform can strengthen Nepal’s criminal justice system. Prepared as part of the B.A.LL.B. practical training, this study provides a student perspective on how sentencing and imprisonment operate in practice—and why meaningful prison reform is essential for a fair, humane, and effective justice system.
