A live exchange between Indian and Chinese design students working with Phulkari embroidery and the Qipao traces moments of misunderstanding, negotiation, pause, and recalibration. These encounters reveal how garments carry memory, gender, ideology, and emotion, and what is at stake when such systems are translated for contemporary use. As fashion moves across borders, tensions around authorship, interpretation, and symbolic integrity become unavoidable. Can tradition evolve without becoming spectacle? Can innovation in craft remain ethical across cultures? Grounded in ethnography, contextual immersion, motif decoding, and experimental work across streetwear, eveningwear, Indian contemporary, and avant-garde categories, a process-driven approach to international craft collaboration unfolds.
