The author is a researcher in the Arabic and Islamic intellectual heritage. His work brings classical Arabic sources into conversation with modern critical approaches, and it includes several studies in gender and social history. He is especially interested in how medieval Muslim scholars wrote about ethics, desire and authority, and in what these texts reveal about the societies that produced them. Historiography of the Heart continues this line of research.
