Description

This book argues that digital immortality — the dream of uploading human consciousness to computers and living forever as data — is impossible. It is not merely technologically challenging; it is physically, logically, ethically, mathematically, and foundationally impossible. Physically, the laws of thermodynamics forbid infinite computation. Energy is finite, and even the universe faces heat death. Landauer’s principle sets a minimum energy cost for every bit operation, so eternal computation would require infinite energy — which does not exist. Logically, any system that tries to build a complete internal model of its own consciousness falls into self-referential paradoxes, analogous to Gödel’s incompleteness theorems. A reflective system cannot produce a final, closed description of itself. The Consciousness Maze Principle captures this open-ended hierarchy of self-models. Ethically and legally, digital immortality raises unbearable questions: Who owns the server that runs your mind? Can you be deleted? If copies exist, which one has rights? Without answers, digital immortality becomes digital slavery. Mathematically, a finite-state machine running forever must eventually loop (pigeonhole principle). True immortality as infinite, non-repeating experience is impossible within finite memory. Deepest of all, mathematicians themselves cannot agree on what “infinity” means. Competing schools — intuitionism (only potential infinity), finitism (no infinity at all), formalism (infinity as a meaningless symbol), and classical set theory (completed infinity) — remain unresolved. Digital immortality is built on a concept that mathematics has not domesticated. The book concludes that these five barriers are not failures but structural features of reality. Finitude — in energy, self-knowledge, legal imagination, computational states, and the very meaning of infinity — is our condition. The dream of infinity is beautiful, but the universe is strict.
