Sirion Robertson was born in Durban, South Africa, in 1943. After completing his primary schooling his family moved to what was then Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). His father was a government employee, and was transferred to various parts of the country. He lived briefly in Fort Jameson (now Chipata), Luanshya, on the copper belt, Livingstone, and finally Lusaka, from where he left to study at the University of Cape Town.
