I trained as a medical doctor, and in clinical practice I saw something striking: patients often spoke about events in ways that no longer matched what actually happened. The more their cognition was distorted, the more clearly their linguistic time reference drifted from real chronology. That recurring mismatch became the seed of my theory that verbal morphology reflects mental representation, not time itself.
