Description
Who Gets to Know Tondo? begins with a persistent question: how much of one’s work in/about place is personal, and how much is scholarly? From that tension, the book develops a larger argument about urban knowledge, representation, and power.
Using Tondo, Manila as its central case, the book examines how marginalized urban places become publicly legible through unequal structures of information, interpretation, and authority. It argues that Tondo is not only a lived district but also a place repeatedly mediated, narrated, and contested through journalism, film, policy discourse, scholarship, and everyday public imagination. In this sense, Tondo is both a geographic locality and an urban imaginary.
Bringing together place-based inquiry, communication and media studies, and urban scholarship, Who Gets to Know Tondo? explores how knowledge about place is shaped by history, stigma, media circulation, community memory, and the politics of who gets to define what counts as credible understanding. At once reflective and analytical, the book asks a broader question relevant to cities across the Urban South: who gets to know a place, and under what conditions does that knowledge come to count?
