Description

A prison can approve a request and still fail to deliver it. A grievance is sustained, yet the remedy never arrives. A program placement is granted, yet the person never makes it through the classroom door. The paperwork says yes. The outcome never happens.   The Prison After the Sentence examines this overlooked space between institutional authorization and institutional performance. Drawing on prison sociology, administrative burden research, implementation studies, and years of practitioner experience inside correctional institutions, Mark L. Chadwick Jr. develops a framework for understanding administrative noncompletion: the condition in which a valid institutional commitment remains open but undelivered.   The book shows how custodial dependency turns ordinary bureaucratic failure into a distinct correctional harm. Outside prison, people can go elsewhere, solve the problem themselves, or escalate. Inside, the institution controls nearly every path to completion. When an approved action stalls, the incarcerated person is pushed into compelled administrative persistence: asking again, refiling, waiting. Meanwhile, the record often shows the matter as handled.   Moving from concept to practice, the book introduces completion ownership, delivery integrity, and repair as tools for keeping institutional promises visible across handoffs, shift changes, and organizational boundaries. It offers a completion-centered measurement architecture, a falsifiable research program, and practical design guidance for correctional leaders.   Written for scholars, administrators, oversight bodies, and practitioners, The Prison After the Sentence asks one question every correctional system should be able to answer: Did the institutional yes become a verifiable event?
