Description

In our modern technological world, we are faced with imminent and innumerable environmental problems. The survival of human kind or race is at stake and there is new deep anxiety about the rapid diminishing of what has become essentials to our way of living; as the rich out of greed and the poor out of need have conspired to be reckless in plundering our planet Earth’s assets. Thus, today, man wields power over the environment. It is he who creates environment. Prior to the beginning of the human race, all species had to adapt themselves to the environment for their survival. Now, due to man who is instrumental in changing environment, the problem is of the survival of the environment. The environment includes; physical, biotic, social and economic and mental surroundings. Thus emission of Greenhouse gases (GHGs) and aerosols to the atmosphere due to human activities, thickens the layer of gases that prevent the sun radiations from going back to the atmosphere, hence causing global increase in temperature (Global warming) due to greenhouse effect. This is a looming disaster on coastal structures (worldwidwe) and must be addressed by all and sundry in this time and age. For example the Kenya coastal structures, once a beauty of natural attraction, risks destruction due to global warming of gradual increasing in the sea level, which will definitely submerge the coastal structures. There is always a conflict between developers and environmentalists. Thus, we need to advocate for sustainable development strategies where both parties agree, so that as we develop, conserve and preserve nature as much as possible. Environmentalists are for the sustainable development. As the controversy over the pros and cons of the coastal zones worldwide, due to global warming, there is need particularly in Kenya to have the Coastal Development Authority (CDA) to initiate plans of managing the current coastal development areas and setting the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules to protect future imminent potential disastrous damages to structures along the coastal region,
